Safety risks

Sudan is not the most obvious travel destination. In the past decades, the country has seen a terrible civil war and violent crimes. It still has very serious human right issues, and there are areas in the south and the west that cannot be visited easily. But, contrary to popular conception, the country has a low crime rate and has not experienced any terrorist attacks on tourists, touristic sights or hotels to date. There have always been tourists in Sudan, and many westerners live and work there, moving freely in Khartoum and the areas we visit.

The highest and most real risks derive from the local traffic – the Sudanese driving style is somewhat dangerous, and accidents are relatively common – and from eating insufficiently cleaned food. We are very much aware of these risks and undertake every effort to minimise them.

Health and vaccinations

Health facilities, hygiene and disease risk vary worldwide. Our tour cooks prepare much of the food that is consumed while on tour themselves and will only process appropriately cleaned food. All our cars are equipped with a first aid box following German legal requirements (DIN 13157). We also carry an additional first aid kit, the content of which is based on our longstanding experience about what kinds of medicine are needed in Sudan. However, we advise you to bring your own first aid kit – see "What to bring" – and sufficient supplies of your personal prescription drugs.

While we are happy to give advice, it remains your responsibility to ensure that you are aware of all recommended and required vaccination and health precautions in good time before departure – not least to ensure that vaccinations will be fully effective at the time of travel. We recommend protection against tetanus, polio, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid. During the winter months there are generally very few mosquitos in northern Sudan and the risk of Malaria is regarded as low. The danger of contracting malaria is highest in Khartoum; please use an appropriate insect repellent throughout the evenings during your stay there. We usually have a stock of Malarone, a Malaria emergency medicine, with us.

Disabled travellers

The multi-centre nature of our tours and the extensive excursion content necessitate a certain amount of walking and mobility. Please be aware that our tours include visits to sites which are not suitable for travellers with disabilities or restricted mobility. Please consider this issue as carefully as we have. It is in the interests of all members of the group that everyone should be capable of fully participating in the activities of the trip.

Personal insurance

We recommend that you obtain travel insurance. Your policy should cover:

  • medical expenses and repatriation
  • personal accident and liability
  • travel delays, abandonment and missed departure
  • cancellation and curtailment
  • personal effects, baggage and money

We suggest that you send us the policy number, the name of the issuing company and the policy emergency telephone number before you travel.
